lemmings: (My fandom goes on a journey of discovery)
I am very sleepy, and my allergies are really bad today, but the coffee at Urbanistar has really helped so hopefully the day will go better. Went for massage therapy yesterday and nearly died from the headache and nausea after. I need to reflect on this for the future.

In cycling news, something else that I have touched on that is awful about spring is bugs. And they are multiplying. Mark came home from a ride this morning with bugs in his eyes and eyebrows and everywhere. Poor thing. So I put on sunglasses for my ride to the coffee shop and I STILL got a bug in my eye. They are crafty and they disintegrate so all you can really feel after is the reminants of like, bug legs and things. Disgusting. And there are flies now. SO MANY FLIES. And it's not even summer yet. Wait til it's summer. It'll be unfathomable.

I feel like I haven't got anything much else to report.

Wait, I do have some pearls of wisdom. Number 1; if you are going to make a mistake at a stop sign, do it in front of a ute full of Irish men. They are happy to tell you it's their mistake and wait for you to head on your way while cheering you on. Number 2; when your boyfriend is complimenting you on how well you dealt with a car at a round about that was doing something stupid, and how you held your line, when your foot comes of the pedal and you start speeding down the hill, just don't spaz out, be calm, stay steady and get your pedalling foot back on. He'll never know.

I saw Deanne on the way home yesterday. She happened upon me as I was crossing the intersection. She said "Really? We're walking across intersections now?" to which I replied "I cannot go up a hill and turn a tight corner at the same time". She responded as if she had gotten it in one; "Ah. No gears". Oh the joys of no gears. It's the worst and it's why the fixi craze will die soon.

My bike is still rattling up a storm and I am scared something will break. Mark checked it and apparently, even though I can feel it in the pedals, it's not the pedals; he thinks it's the chain hitting the chain guard. Must be loose. I don't know if he is going to fix it or if I need to take it in for a service.

I have selected a Star Lady Pin Up for today, but because the Cycle Instead site crashed my photo album and isn't letting me add another that is functional, it seems pointless to even talk about it. Today's pin up is another lovely lady, Miss Drew Barrymore, in a cute stripe dress against a really colourful background on a little maroon bike. I have been saving this one. Also as I missed yesterday I am going to nominate yesterday's lady as, in view of all the Buffy I have been reading and watching lately, Mrs Sarah-Michelle Gellar. This photo looks like she just hopped off her pink ladies bike on the way into the shops, but I have got to say, those heels are ferocious. I wouldn't want to be riding in those. I think in actual fact it's an ad for Maybelline or something. Also, what is with all these celebrities and their pink bikes? I've seen so many pictures of people on pink bikes.

Last week of the challenge next week. I should really register for ride to work day. But I don't want to go where the free breakfast is and I might have law business to attend to. Life is hard.

[EDIT] - Fixed it! You can now see the second volume of Pin Ups in the associated folder.
lemmings: (My fandom escapes.)
Well, that's it. It looks like I won't make it to 100kms in the next week and a bit. Turns out that soon after my previous blog post I came down with a mystery illness that has seen me at home, in bed for the rest of the afternoon and the following day. In between the writhing and the trying not to throw up and the sleepless nights I managed to yell at television screens; particularly about Rush and AT the less interesting characters of Stargate Universe... but I digress. I had to leave my bike in the bike cage at work because I could barely stand on Monday afternoon, let alone pedal on a street. I took a taxi and collapsed into my bed, and all the while I was a little bitter that this had deprived me of a goal. A goal that I knew was unrealistic to begin with, but seems stupid now. Of course that means no riding the following day and no riding into work today. I still feel pretty awful but as I am back today I am going to attempt taking her home... and if Mark has his way it'll be via the clmibing gym. I am scared that I don't have the strength and inner will to go climbing today, but I don't want to let him down. Mind you, if I pass out while he's climbing, there won't BE anyone to let him down, so maybe I should explain it that way. I don't really know what it is, it's either soy induced food poisoning or an overload of medication, or maybe it's something else. I hope I am not about to die.

My back is also killing me because the work I am doing today requires my neck to be at funny angles and that I sit in places without footrests. I will leave my work to your imagination.

But what I should be talking about is cycling. Cycling. Yes there are crickets chirping. I don't really have much to say on the world of cycling front, except that I have stumbled upon some lovely pictures to add to the blog and that I need to find the appropriate credit source for them. So I can link. Oh, and that Martin is trying to find the blog because he thinks I am blogging about him, which made me realise that all this blogging about cycling is a wasted opportunity. I should really just be blogging about Martin and the gems of knowledge and humour he bequeaths to me. Like, did you know that the owner of Segway died falling off a cliff on a Segway? I wouldn't know that if Martin hadn't discovered it and passed it on to Mark. Also, important, Martin recently won the lottery so I have to be extra nice to him if I want any of his newly acquired block of dark chocolate. He says I can have some if I can guarantee there won't be any crums. I am not entirely the lying sort, so I haven't eaten any yet.

Yes... cycling. As I have missed yesterday's blogging spectacular, today I am going to post two pin ups. I say pin ups because in this case, one is not a lady, but indeed, a man. I wonder what folder I can put him in. I might have to re-name the folder! At any rate for yesterday I am uploading the lovely Scarlett Johansson in a sailor cap on a cool looking bike. I don't think it's overly raunchy or anything so all should be well. I am also going to upload a dapper young gentleman who can make the worst cut suit look like the garb of a price. Matt Bomer is Neal Caffery on White Collar and arguably one of the most handsome men alive right now. When I looked for Don Draper on a bike and couldn't find him, I thought my time had passed, but there was something better. This photo doesn't see him sporting a suit (I have one of those too) but it's very cool and I daresay I had a heart attack when it popped up during my pin up search! *swoon*

Missed the Pin Pals dinner and I hope it went well. Therefore, no photos. But as we have been speaking about Martin winning, and other winners, I would like to take this opportunity to link you to http://www.therandomact.org/wordpress/ where Misha Collins (of Supernatural Fame) just ran 83KMs for charity and raised over 84 thousand dollars doing it. It's all a bunch of fans and geeks who have gotten together under this benevolent overload and donated money for people who cannot feed themselves let alone ride bikes... though to link it more fluidly to the blog, they did give bikes to people just resting in a park.

[Edit: Subject - THE WORST - Bike West Site just ATE my Star Pin Ups album which means no Scarlett, no Matt, and no Gwyneth, Grace and Kelly. When I move to Deamwidth everything will be fine]

Updates: Pictures.

The weekend was riddled with success; Collingwood won the Grand Final (it was considered a success in my household, please don't hold it against me), Merlin and Supernatural were both very good, Jacinta's birthday party was fun and Oktober Fest at work provided me with some great pretzels. The greatest success, however, is awarded to cycling to a date at 2 Fat Indians in a little black dress and little red heels. This is the first time I have ridden on the road through round abouts and in Glory pedestrian traffic in heels and I have to say, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I am proud of my success and Mark seems to think that being able to ride out in stunning clothes on a date is living the dream. There's nowhere to go after this it seems. I'll upload a picture that he took of me with my bike and you can judge for yourselves! Maybe

The cycling Road Championships were on and I watched the last hour and a half. It was pretty good. I won't bore you all with the details, but let's just say it was a close finish and exciting at the time. An Australian picked up the bronze which is great considering this year the Championships were held in Geelong.

Work on the separate blog space has continued with a couple of hours of trying to hunt down appropriate icons to use. Would you believe that people photograph the most stunning things for stock icons but not bikes? It's amazing! Yes I am geek speaking, I am sorry. But I did find one of the Supernatural boys on a hilarious tandem bike, one of a couple of the Skins girls riding, an Ellen Page one and a Flight of the Concords one. Until I can get to making my own these will serve me well I think. I also found an amazing Ellen Page wallpaper which I will mess around with in the days to come.

In Pin Pals news, tonight is a Pin Pals dinner which will be nice, and Angela's boyfriend has designed cool Pin Pals shirts using the Marylin picture in the Star Lady Pin Ups folder. It's looking super cute and hopefully there will be an example of one by the end of the week. We also have a movie event which will be nice depending on what is happening with One Movement Festival.

I wonder, since I have now ridden to places such as training, concerts and dates during this challenge, if I should be setting myself other goals of places to take my bike...

While I ponder this conundrum, please check out the days Star Lady Pin Up, Miss Kelly Brook. I has no idea who she is really, aside from being an actress, but she has some serious style and seriously rides her bike in MASSIVE heels. I feel this is in keeping with my story about lovely dresses and riding in heels (though I could never ride in those) and so one of her many incredible shots will be uploaded momentarily.

Hopefully pictures from dinner will go up tomorrow, depending on if my batteries die. Fingers crossed!
lemmings: (My fandom don't love racist fruit vendor)
Cycling in my Chuck Taylors makes me about a bajillion times faster. I fly. I should really ride in them more often, but the propect of changing my shoes when I get to work has never really sat well with me. I tried it once during the cycling challenge and it was bareable, but only just, which is evidenced by the fact I have not done it again.

What this mornings ride did indicate to me was that there is something wrong with my bike. It's clicking right in the left pedal, and it's driving me insane. It's loud and I can feel it in my shoe when I am riding. I need to know what it is, I hope Mark can have a look at it soon. I probably need to service my bike.

Last night I watched an episode of Flight of the Concords, you know the one with the racist fruit vendor? Well, they sing a song while riding push bikes and bouncing. I would like this skill but I cannot even take my hands off my handlebars sometimes to adjust my clothing or signal or scratch my nose, let alone bop. At any rate, I think I want a moving icon of them bouncing for my blog. Awesome.

There's a bit of a drought in news today really. It's a shame because it means the blogging experience for the day is about to end, and it gives me such solace that I do not want it to end so quickly.

Work on the new blog space has begun and makes me happy. Mark isn't sure about the colour, Kez thinks it's lovely. I like it. I already found a very nice blogger there whom I intend to friend who has been posting some nice pictures of bikes and actors/models and such. I think they'll compliment each other nicely. Plenty of work to still do though to get everything set up and over there.

I wanted a Pin Up this Friday with a vintage feel. I found a picture of Ditte Von Tease with a bike, but I think for this blog space it might be a little too ranchy, so I left that for when I move. I hear there is one of Scarlett Johansson, but apparently that one is too provokative so she's out until I move as well. Then I tried for January Jones, Mrs Betty Draper on Mad Men and discovered no pictures of her with a bike. I thought I was ruined. Thankfully, on the blog I spied yesterday of one lovely bicyclette, I saw a stunning picture of Grace Kelly (and Mrs Draper certainly looks like her). Not wanting to post that specific picture I have found another that has a very spring/summer feel, unique style and I think captures a whole new type of vintage.

Well, it's over for another day it seems. I'll attempt some blog space moving over the weekend, but I doubt it'll happen. Wish me luck though!
lemmings: (My fandom rides in style.)
Spring is the worst. We've now gotten to the stage of spring where no matter where you ride, projectiles come your way. It's like you have to wear sunglasses and a dust mask just to go out these days. If it's not pollen getting up your nose, it's bugs flying into your eyes and your hair, and if you are unlucky, your mouth too. I hear that they even get caught in your leg hairs! Some of us are supremely unlucky. Yesterday, while successfully riding through a round about and up a hill a fly decided to, with some velocity, fly right into my nasal passage and buzz around for a bit. It was awful. How I managed to not fall off my bike is beyond me, as is how I managed to get it out. I can't describe the noises I was making, or the feeling that lingered after, but it was all disturbing. Many of you are laughing now, and that's okay, one day you will be the supremely unlucky one.

It seems, anything that is good for the cyclist is awful for the allergist (yes, having allergies of this magnitude is an art) and vice versa. Daylight saving, great for those who want to ride, not so great for the people who are allergic to pollen and wake at an 'earlier' time to inhale even more pollen than normal. Rain, excellent for keeping the pollen down, not so great for the morning cycle, complete with flicking mud and rain in your eyes. It's a hard life to lead.

And so, as it is raining today, Bianca is at home and we caught the bus in. It wasn't so bad, but I did miss my ride. At the same time, I am still sneezing up a storm. I am not a pretty sight. I looked at myself in the mirror in the bathroom and just wanted to go home. Itchy eyes, red and running nose, feel like I have been hit with a large pole. I just want to go to sleep.

News in the world of cycling tells me that Alberto Contador is a filthy cheat. Well, it doesn't say that specifically, in fact it kinda says it's all a big misunderstanding. See I have never liked to watch cycling, I have never seen the appeal. Living with a cyclist changes things by necessity. For example, if you are the nerd of the house you'd better make sure that since you've moved out together there is a fully functioning television unit which he can watch the Tour de France on in HD. It's your duty, and I take my duty seriously. It also means occassionally you watch what is on, and more often than not you are inflicted with both rules, trivia and other people who come over to inflict you with the same. As this happens you seem to retain things via osmosis and all of a sudden you've developed a habit, a passion that makes little to no sense but that you cannot keep inside. Mine was a deep affection for Andy Schleck and a boundless loathing for Alberto Contador. And for anyone who watched this years tour (I won't bore you others) the events (in my head) proved me right. Anyway, Alberto now has tested positive for steroids and they all think it's a food contamination incident, and they are probably right, but that is not the point. It is my duty to hate him.

http://www.theage.com.au/sport/cycling/alberto-contador-tests-positive-to-steroid-20100930-15y37.html

Also, leading on from yesterday's lycra drive (me basically saying it might not be all that bad), Mark sent me a link to lady cycling ladies... you know, for the world championships.

http://blogs.crikey.com.au/northern/2010/09/29/women-of-the-2010-world-road-cycling-championships/

They obviously don't get enough recognition and they should. What they are doing, when you think about it, is pretty amazing.

And again, to move past dwelling on those who choose spandex over the lovelier things, and for their sakes, we come to our Star Lady Pin Up of the day. I think today I will post Gwyneth Paltrow, not because I love her or her work, but because that is one AMAZING dress and indeed, one amazing outfit. I don't know whether it's for a movie or for something else but it's out of control. She seems to embody what I am talking about there.

Blogs are fun, and so, on that note, I will inform this corner of the internet that I will be moving to another. This other corner will back up this blog, removing those names necessary and carry forward the review of all things cycling, and no doubt when I get bored, other things, like what Mark likes, movies, funny things etc. so that after the challenge is over, there will be an external record.
lemmings: (My fandom never let go.)
I know I have been inactive with this account (or so the home page tells me) for over a year.

I know I had the best of intentions for it, but Livejournal gets in the way of those, as well as, well life.

I WILL achieve this goal of having a separate reviewing blog space then, and I will do it here.

I will start by backing up my cycling blog here I think, so that once this years cycle in spring challenge is over, I will still have access to these entries.

At this point, this journal will remain un-locked. All posts will be public.

Thinking about cross-posting options now.

Needs a lot of work but this is a start.
lemmings: (My fandom is a princess.)
I just wish I could stop sneezing. Riding home from the lecture last night (which BTW was amazing!) all I could do was smell tree pollen and avoid bottle brush in an attempt to not get more sick than I was already going to get. I enjoy riding, but riding through flying pollen attacks is less than optimal. I also enjoyed riding into work this morning and I have reached my initial goal of riding 50kms this challenge. Low I know it seems, given my boyfriend can smash out 90kms in an afternoon without working up a sweat (that last bit was a lie), but I don't live very far away from things and my bike is really really hard to ride. It's like when the website tells you that a 15km ride will be very plesant and not take long and I'm like, DUDE have you ever ridden my bike? It's awful. You'll get sweaty after a couple of K's. And it's hard and I have to keep reminding myself to pedal and that I can get up that small incline because I did it yesterday or the day before that. I once lost a broccoli on a street pedalling up a hill, and I didn't realise til I got home and wanted to cook it. At any rate, I'm proud of my achievement and I have another few weeks to see if I can get to 100kms. I doubt this will happen, I think I will fall just short. If I hadn't been in Melbourne the first week I would have gotten there. Maybe this means more cycling, I don't know if I can rise to that challenge. Between the pollen and the working it just doesn't seem like it's going to happen. I am not spiralling into depression, becoming unenthused or giving up. Not at all... I'm just, respecting my boundaries and being realistic. I need to do my tax.

Speaking of all those things, pollen, tax and goals that dangle above us, I would like to talk about something very similar; lycra. To many of us who are confused by people who wear this material and who have had bad encounters with those who are clad as such, it can be like the above. Irritating, infuriating and intimidating. There is an important story in this; for every lycra wearing and super fast cyclist who nearly knocks you off your little push bike, there is another who wears lyrca when racing or riding for sport and who would gladly wear normal clothes and ride with you, look stylish and even, lord forbid, help you if you are in trouble. Knowing how to take care of yourself on a bike is important, but it's also important to remember that if you did get into a pickle, these are the people most likely to be able to help. These are the people most likely to have a spare tube or patching equipment, to know the nearest cycle shop and to be able to give you some help. It might be awful to think we might have to ask, but at the same time, it's important not to fear them. I'd like to think some of them are, after all, human beings. I know a few of them who are; my boyfriend for one. He's seen crazy cyclists speed past me and nearly knock me off my bike and he's raised his fist to the heavens and cursed after them, and I am sure he would do the same for you. I'm sure he's nearly been hit himself by some and likewise, he's probably ridden along with people he doesn't know just for the joy of riding. Maybe we'll never be fast enough to do that, and that's fine, but I think it's nice to believe that there are some people who you'd be able to catch on their bikes, complete strangers, and be able to ride with. I wonder if I can do that.

Also, lycra (I am told) is easier to cycle in. Now, I have thought about this scientifically and it seems sound. I for one know how annoying it is when your skirt blows up in the head wind on the way to work, lycra doesn't blow up, but it also means they can ride in more comfort and faster. If you are anything like me, the prospect of going faster is enough to make you want to ride in 3 woolen jumpers to weigh you down, but I guess some people like that feeling. And helmets seem to be built on similar premises. Again, if you are like me, the rounder skate helmet looks cooler and so I wear that instead, but I have seen some sleek helmets on ladies that looked very cool. I have also seen Andy Schleck be cheated out of a Tour Win (subjective opinion) and do some CRAZY stunts to catch up. It was AMAZING and the aerodynamics of that technology are very interesting to me. Plus I totally roll down my street making myself as small and bullet like as possible to emulate that ride in some small way. Seriously, I did it this morning. It might be sad, but it WAS also a little fun.

So be kind you your fellow cyclist even if he's awful to you. We are better than that. And maybe if they stop thinking the world hates them, they'll have no need to hate the world.

And now, to press onto things that are in no way shape or form lycra, please see today's Star Lady Pin Up, Kate Hudson. I love this picture because she looks so business dressed and it would be really cool to see more ladies dressed such and riding into work. It's a very good look. There has to be a mindset change; that you CAN ride in everyday and even stylish clothes, that you don't have to ride far to be a cyclist and that sport and going to the local pub (or comic book store) in a singlet and jeans (or a huge Alice dress) can coexist.
lemmings: (My fandom are angelic.)
He is the... Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Great Beast that is called Dragon, Prince of This World, Father of Lies, Spawn of Satan, and Lord of Darkness.
Do you think that, if Crowley created the M25 (is it?) to be in a demonic sigil, destined to make people curse and fill with bile, that he perhaps invented cycling?

No. Really?

Wouldn't that make sense? Because cyclists curse cyclists and so do pedestrians and motorists. They enrage people to the point of wanting to run others over willingly. This is one of Crowley's genius plans. All playing out to a Queen soundtrack. They have a song about Bicycles. And I think in it they complain about Jesus Christ.

Haven't read Good Omens? You should.
lemmings: (My fandom are brothers.)
So as you will now all be aware, the footy was a drawn match, the pollen of doom is still at large and the work bike lock up is still too full. I would like to say that I spent the weekend cycling but I didn't. I folded paper cranes, I tried to stop my boyfriend from football induced combustion, there were too many pies, I read comics in a coffee shop and introduced Mark to the wonders of Good Omens, and I went to a concert. Good weekend... aside from the allergies. Oh the allergies. I hate going outside. I FEAR going outside. I wake up in the middle of the night snotty. I cannot breathe and I cannot open windows. It's awful.

But back to what the blog is actually about (cycling...) I took B out yesterday because it was my duty to contribute to my team. We went for a roll to the shops in the sun which was lovely, and then at night we rolled over to William Street for dinner and then to the Amplifier for Regurgitator. It was pretty cold, but the ride was pretty good. I enjoyed waving at Callum from my perch on my bike while riding off down the street. He'd never seen me on my bike and the chortle he let out (and it really only could be called a chortle) was warming to my heart. I've also been practicing riding more on busier roads, but at night. I figure that way I will be more prepared if I feel like riding on them during the day because I will know what is coming.

This morning I am in an allergy haze, but I rode into work anyway. I think I was going faster than normal because I was having to break a lot harder. Note to self; when you have allergy haze you get a lead foot Miss.

We're going to a lecture at Murdoch Uni tonight about a woman who lead an expedition team in Antarctica for 9 months. It's going to be really awesome. Would take the bikes up there but I think B might roll back down the hill, so we'll see how the night time goes. If we go to Ricky's after, I have a feeling that they will stay here.

Also, I hear I missed yet another Don Draper opportunity. I have Mr. Miller to thank for that one. It's a shame because he's looking very well dressed.

As there was a public holiday, I will upload two Star Lady Pin Up's today. As a lot of people who read my blog are TrueBlood fans, and as the TrueBlood convention was this weekend in Melbourne and Sydney, I am uploading a picture of Anna Paquin, casually cycling on one of her many Hello Kitty bicycles. The treat (if that's what you would call it) is that this photograph also has Stephen Moyer, whom I believe is also on the show, in it. Given that this weekend was also the start of a new season of Supernatural, the other Star Pin Up is Danneel Harris, now wife of Jensen Ackles, looking lovely and casual on her tandem bike with Mr. Ackles. A couple of examples of girls casually cycling in casual clothes, which really is the whole point isn't it?

Here's to another week of Grand Final anticipation, allergies, getting yelled at for where you lock your bike and avoiding getting glassed:/
lemmings: (My fandom rides in style.)
I am impressed I didn't fall off my bike on the way in today, the pollen of doom attacked and it was all I could do to breathe through my mouth and keep pedalling. Deanne says we should launch an attack on these allergy inducing scum, and I say, good on her. They are making our riding challenge (not to mention life) very difficult. And they attack in the morning, right when you have your guard down, when you emerge bleary eyed and blinking into the sun, barely having consumed caffine or food, that's when they strike. And they strike hard. Of course towards the end of the day, they slink into the shadows like ghosts in the night, and they make you believe that maybe it was all in your head, it wasn't so bad, did you even sneeze? Do you remember through the haze? And that's how they lull you, ready to pounce again in the morning. I hate Spring.

It does, however, look like a lot more people are riding on the roads and into work. The streets today were riddled with cyclists so it was more important at times to look for them rather than cars, and the bike cage at work was packed. I photographed it in the hopes that maybe someone will see it and admit that we need more space to lock up our bikes. Mine is currently locked to the outside of the cage.

In other news, tomorrow is the AFL Grand Final and everyone is on edge. I have to be particularly careful as my boyfriend is a Collingwood supporter (yes I know, there are many reasons I have to be careful), but moreso because I have to wear black and white, which means I am not allowed to ride my bike in those clothes, because my bike is red, and white, black and red are the colours of the opposition; St Kilda. This could cause me a lot of trouble indoors and outdoors so I have resolved to stay inside at least half of the day with my bike tucked in a corner, my head down and my legs ready to run at a moments notice. I know which doors lock and I have a game plan. I also need to pick up pies and candy.

Mark sent me a link to these blogs:

http://www.fyxomatosis.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=458:tgif&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=97

http://helmetsarehot.net/2010/09/sometimes-i-think-im-mad/

Helmet Lady has some serious style. She looks like a fun person. I need to meet some more crazy fun people. I mean, how cool is that? Stopping strangers in the street to have a conversation about something like a helmet and coming away with amazing stories of a man of 82's life. That's something we don't do enough.

And moving onto style, as we had hoola hooping yesterday and the vintage market is on the weekend, I am uploading a vintage pin up picture of Marilyn Monroe with a gold bike and burlesque style retro outfit. Very cool I think.

I'd normally go out encouraging you to ride more etc. etc. but I just saw a picture of Van Dam with a mullet eating a rattle snake and it's made me feel sick and I think it's more important to ask you this weekend to battle the pollen plague rather than continue to do what you are already doing; riding.
lemmings: (My fandom is a girl advernturer.)
The internet keeps telling me to get outdoors and get active in spring and to that I say, "No. Go away". Why you ask? Well because I have horrendously bad allergies and let me tell you first hand a sneezing fit with itchy watery eyes is not fun, let alone when you get one on your bike. I can barely get outside before I get an attack, let alone in Kings Park amongst the Wildflowers! I am sorry, I just cannot enjoy you spring, you make me not want to cycle, but given the name of this whole challenge, I am forced to ignore you and try anyway.

Yesterday I saw the lovely Felicity get on her bike and roll off to an art gallery. I think that's something I am loving about this challenge. Seeing people use their bikes for everything and seeing them do it in really cool clothes. She rode in when I did this morning and looked stunning again, I would have taken photos of this, but then the whole blog would have been about her.

Another person I saw being very daper this week was my young man in a suit on his bike. I wish I had photos of that, it was very Don Draper, except I think Don Draper wouldn't ride a bike. But he should, he'd turn heads. I just did a quick search and apparently Jon Hamm does triathlon's as well, so maybe Don Draper DOES ride a bike, I just cannot find a picture. At anyrate, the internet also tells me there are people in Britain who ride with Don Draper's style. I saw pictures of that. It's good.

Speaking of style, I have been waiting all night to post today's Star Cycle Pin Up Lady. Jo tells me that kids are supposed to ride bikes, and to that I say, yes Jo, but kids don't normally do it in style. Yesterday Anneke drew my attention to something, something great that turned into something fantastic. Everyone knows Will Smith is cool. Like super cool. The thing no body realised was that his daughter Willow is super cool too. Willow is apparently about 7 or 8 and as Anneke says, she doesn't normally condone children dressing older than their age, but this little ladies style is awesome. I hunted and discovered an adorable picture of Willow in Cookie magazine riding her bike in front of her mother Jada, in the COOLEST tights and hip hop style clothes. It makes me happy.

I have hoola hooping tonight and I would ride there if I could just work out how to safely ride whilst also carrying hoola hoops. Hmmmm...
lemmings: (My fandom make helmets love.)
As promised, last night, after riding around during the day, I rode to the climbing gym after work and climbed some walls. I was pretty impressed with myself given I was climbing harder things and have been out of practice. Also given I got up to a really high point on one climb and rather than seeing the rafters and freaking out and falling I stopped to inspect the dust and cobwebs thinking it would make for a great photo. Of course it would have involved me climbing up there again which was not going to happen. Rode home the long way via Prestige Kebabs to pick up some dinner, so I am sure I rode more than I wrote down, but I still don't think it's nearly as much as anyone else is riding. I say this because this morning, my sitting bones were really sore. I could barely pedal comfortably up the little hill onto Barrack street and yesterday I was smashing much bigger hills sans gears. I think I peaked early.

At any rate, I am glad I had some strength left in my weary old lady bones to ride into work again today. I think it's becoming force of habit which is terrifying because it makes me think "Oh no! I am becoming one of them!". It's not that I don't like "them" it's that I don't want to belong. Actually it's just that I am being funny. I think that's the point that I have discovered in my many wobbles and learnings; cyclists get a cheesey grin when they see other people cycling and most of them are more than happy to help out with tips or to compliment you on your bike or riding style. Maybe it's that B is such a tiny bike, I don't know, that's just my experience of it. I mean, when I bought my bike I was firmly against the concept of riding. It freaked me out and, more than that, I had un-learned how to ride a bike (I know, I am capable of crazy things). The fact that she looked so cool and matched me well and Mark had found her made me want to buy it to give it a try. It was worth it for the grin it received. But having said that, I was HOPELESS. Like I cannot tell you how many times I was not able to pedal down a small side street or turn my bike around. I learned how to ride at night on a side street with Deanne running beside me screaming enthusiastic enthusiasm. Mark yelled at me (in a loving way) to learn to use my back pedal break when riding because it's safer, and I was terrified of skidding. I am sure the reason I haven't fallen off yet is my sheer will power and belief that falling off is the last thing in the world I want to do. I had Anneke trying to dink me on my bike and getting nowhere, I tried to dink her which was also a bad idea. I could never keep up with her or Mark most of the time. But I think in my head I was just amused when I was riding with someone else because I have that little Scrubs JD aside that thinks I am part of some sort of cycling gang when there are more than two of us rolling very unthreateningly down a side street together. I haven't been confident enough to ride on less busy roads til now and I still fail at some basic things. I choose when I am comfortable and when I am not. I am sure (well no, this is a lie, Mark probably wouldn't think this) that Mark must get sick of me slowing him down or not being able to get up hills or ride to a concert because the dress I am wearing doesn't have enough give to pedal. I think the fact that I am still riding is a boone because I actually never really wanted to, I'm still a bit scared and I still have plenty of reasons to not want to. But I have an unwitting and unconditional love for my bike and so I keep doing it.

Enough of my self reflective ramblings. In other news, Jana sent me some more of my Glamour Push pictures and asked me to remind you all to wear helmets when you ride. I know you all do, I've seen some of the cool ones you have, but for those who might not be aware there are some great ones out there, you just have to look hard or be internet saavy. At some stage I would like to take photos of people in their helmets specifically to make people think it might be cool. Maybe I am fighting a lost cause, but I like those, so why not? I am also going to upload a couple of the new Glamour Photos for ya'll to see. Maybe

And finally, today's Star Pin Up Girl is the ever lovely and classic Audrey Hepburn in black and white on a stylish old ladies bike. I love her cute little polka dot dress and I think if anyone ever made the cyclist stylish, it was probably this little miss. Photo is in the gallery and a couple of snaps from yesterday's adventure will be up later today or tomorrow.Potentially Until then, keep cycling.

Today I had training at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and I rode my bike from my house all the way there. It was lengthy and plesant and I managed to not hit cars or pedestrians. I rode through glass too (this is not something you should do but I can) because Mark and I have found and put bomb proof tubes in my tyres. It makes me live on the cycling wild side occassionally. Ditched my bike crossing the curb to the Hyatt but thankfully I was walking my bike. Those things are not human friendly let along bike friendly, it's stupid. This curb was substantially taller than others so you wouldn't have wanted to try to jump it on a regular bike let alone on B. Locked my bike to a tree and started panicking that it was going to get stolen. I'm telling you, there is not much worse than seeing an empty street (see photo in the album) with your bike locked up in it and thinking it is done for. Thankfully I was using Mark's massive cable lock.

The training was really awesome and I emerged finding my bike not stolen and in fact, still locked to the tree. SUCCESS!!! I proceeded back to work dodging cyclist and pedestrians at lunch and managed to soak up some much needed sun and fresh air.

We intend, this afternoon, to ride up to the rock climbing gym. I realise given that I am blogging about cycling a lot and have now mentioned rock climbing, that some of you might think that I am into fitness and health. This assumption would be incorrect. I dislike this predominantly, but actually riding and actually climbing with people you like is actually fun. Actually. Which means that any fitness gains are secondary for me. I just like to roll around and occassionally climb some walls while being terrified. Actually.

In other news my dear team mate Carmel has linked me a really cool site detailing some of Ellen Page's efforts re:cycling and cycling design. Given she is a previous Pin Up Lady on my blog I will link this stellar read here:

http://www.ellenpage.org/news/newsscript.php?rssid=222

and post another picture of Ellen and her bike in the Pin Up album. This one is of her on her cute pink ladies bike in suitably cool denim waistcoat, t-shirt, scarf, jeans and chucks. The lady has it down.

And on the subject of our Star Lady Pin Up's I am going to upload today's star lady in the move back to a more glamourous focus; miss Zooey Deschanel. Here pictured in super cute crop top with pedal pushers and red heels to match her stunning red ladies push bike. Zooey has many pictures with her bike in various styles, like Ellen, and if the website permits me with its limited space, I will upload these in the future.

In closing I received an email (a group email) from David Meyer yesterday on the Cycling in Spring Challenge. In it is states the following: "PRIZES TO BE WON: BikeWest is giving away Bicycle Packs and prizes for riders using the website features. We'll give away prizes to riders with a Profile picture on their page. Prizes will be awarded for the best pictures plus random winners. Also prizes will be given for the best Bicycle Quote plus random Quotes will win a prize. So upload your Profile picture and Bicycle Quote this week to win." Turns out that what Deanne thinks is a silly and lame attempt for me to win prizes is actually legitimate. I think I have a good case if I don't win a prize and I hope I win a good prize. Because I have been utilizing the website in a BIG way people. And because I want a new bike with gears. No really. Hills are hard.

Today Martin suggested we all ride up and see the wildflowers in Kings Park. Apparently they are very beautiful. The ground in Kings Park is carpeted currently with Martin's favourite flower, Everlastings. They are tall and small and blanket the area in a sea of pink and white, seamlessly flowing together between the trees and attracting various insects with their colourful array.

I've performed google searches to discover the power of Everlastings, and granted I haven't been at it long, but I don't think I have found anything that captures the boundless beauty of what Martin so eloquently described to me. I feel like it is pointless to believe that the essence of their appeal, the way that they reach out and metaphorically touch the viewer, could ever be captured by a photograph. I can only hope Martin goes up to Kings Park and takes some photos riding amongst the Everlastings, as I so greatly want to do, but cannot due to my allergies.

What I have found are a few images that set the scene; really start to inspire the imagination as to what Martin is truly talking about. I would have uploaded these to an album entitled "Everlasting Fire", but the cycle instead in spring website isn't equipt for the sheer number of photos and blog posts that I have assaulted it with. Alas I will have to merely send these on to those who are interested and allow you all to imagine their stunning relevance. Personally, I think cyclists prefer to ride through or past fields of sunflowers, or at least that's what seemed to happened during the Tour De France, but not Martin, I think he's carrying the torch for West Australian riders, asking us to think not of those in France or around the world, cycling past golden fields or forests of green, but to think of our backyard, the sweeping banks of pinks and whites that blow in the sea breeze and make Kings Park a special place. Martin, WA salutes you.

I didn't ride on the weekend, there just wasn't the need for it. I did ride this morning however, into work, and I have planned my ride to the Hyatt tomorrow morning for training. Hopefully it won't be scary and people won't yell at me. I don't like being yelled at. Obviously, I am not going to ride on the road on Adelaide Tce, it looks like it would be a heart stopping venture. My mother has enough heart attacks per week thinking about how "her poor short daughter" is riding on roads. I don't really want to be responsible for her fear induced death... or my own.

Gianni sent me some pictures of his sweet bike which I will upload later along with a bunch of bikes that he has photographed on the street up that end of the city. Some of them are pretty sweet, and apparently found around or outside the Apple store. Damn Apple and damn Steve Jobs, it's taking over the world. I like the black one a lot but I think the others have merit. It's interesting that there are so many cropping up around the place, especially down that end.

This whole star ladies pin up thing is becoming a learning experience for me! I mean, I had no idea that Eliza Dushku was a triathlon rider in her spare time. Or that she was a rock climber. I guessed she'd ride motor bikes though. I know the point of this is style and not lycra but there is an image that I have found of her in full lycra and I'm telling you, the woman is a one in a billion at pulling it off. It's out of control. Like I don't even think I can upload it here because it might break the internet. I don't even think it's riding lycra, it's probably swimming lycra. At any rate, rather than upload that, I'll upload a less glam one of her after doing the race mainly because I think it's important that generally she IS so stylish. You can then google image search her if you'd like to understand my meaning.

So yeah, it's been cool hunting down pictures of awesome girls who ride bikes... but it does mean I also discovered ones of Miley Cycrus riding a bike... those were less inspiring.
lemmings: (My fandom kicks major butt.)
Today has been a really hard day, so instead of focusing on that, I am going to focus on blogging about cycling. Deanne laughs at me and asks if I am trying to win that bike in the lamest way possible, I say no, because I don't think people who make decisions will be reading this blog, I do, however, hope that someone recognises my upstanding qualities, dedication and winning smile. Someone has to. Woe is me.

But enough of that. To drown my sorrow I went to Perth's greatest comic book shop QUALITY COMICS and spoke to my good friend Gianni. Gianni showed me his new fixed gear bike (in photographic format) that he built himself. It's amazing, dark green with white wall tyres. I think we should ride together, I think we will look like Christmas in a really awesome better than Christmas way. I also think that I convinced him to build me a bike, so maybe I don't need this fancy bike I may or may not be blogging so hard for, I am sure Gianni's special will be cooler. He has the cool DOWWWWNNNN.

I hope he sends me pictures of it soon, then I can post them in the albums for everyone to see. Can you tell I like his bike?

Also, as I was leaving, I saw a really cool poster for a Vintage Market/Fair in Fremantle on October 17th. The picture is a vintage pin up on a bike. I photographed it rather than trying to find pen and paper to write the details down but it's supported by Sugar Blue Burlesque and cost like $3 to get in! I think it's a great event to get a bunch of people together for and we can take our bikes and ride around Freo. It's also the last day of the challenge so it'll be nice to go out that way.

Now for today's star on a bike lady pin up. As you may have guessed, today's lovely is Ellen Page. I love this photograph though when I investigated further I found that what she is wearing is very expensive. Still, awesome to see that ladies can ride in serious lady-like style.

More organisation of events to come, hopefully will get some cool trips in this weekend. Until then, we'll all keep sponging off Deanne rides to Stirling.
lemmings: (My fandom wears the most excellent footw)
I bought a new pair of boots recently, and to my delight this morning, discovered that rather than making it impossible to ride, they actually act as a form of cycling clip, making me a lot faster and better at riding in boots. My comment on these boots being made to ride in is that recently, with the commencement of the cycling challenge, Glamour Push and Pin Pals my recent interest in girls cycling comfort and style has peaked. I like wearing things that I think are cool and therefore, I don't want to have to change clothes to ride or carry a spare chage with me. Fussy, I know, but I think you should be able to do it. I've had chats about cycling calendars and pocket mirrors, riding in heels and in dresses, helmets and baskets, they all seem vastly important in my personal experience of cycling. I think mainly this is because they all make my experience easier.

On this note I have been talking to Felicity about things that girls might like for cycling, or things that we would think were awesome. Baskets are right up there as well as skate helmets and riding gloves. I have some ideas for pouches with pocket mirrors, folding brushes and other bits and pieces. Jo came up with the great concept of a draw string and screen printed bag to place within your basket. If only I had more time I would most certainly make these things, but I don't, and I don't have the money to pay for friends to make them... or a bike shop to sell them in.

The point is, I think more women would cycle if they thought they could do it in comfort and in style, and I think that a bunch of girls on a girls cycling team who cycle together and often never touch lycra could be well placed to do something, however small, about it. I think I am going to add a cycling style section to this blog and to the photo albums and update with images of awesome actresses on bikes, photos of the Pin Pals cycling in style and also... maybe of random strangers. I honed those skills in Melbourne, in theory I could do it again... I don't know. I think the poster girl for cycling in style should be Ellen Page though, because she is AMAZING, owns and rides a bunch of cool bikes and does it all looking very cool.

Also, a huge welcome to our new Pin Pal Jane!!! I think if nothing else this challenge means that we have accomplished getting some people riding, dining and talking!
lemmings: (My fandom never let go.)
[Edit] I don't really know when I posted this so I am guessing dates!

It's good to be back in the swing of things where cycling is concerned, I did miss it over in Melbourne.

Yesterday, in the spirit of it all (and because we had just come back and so had no food in the house) Mark and I headed out for Breakfast on our bikes. We parked at Urbanistar for a coffee and breakfast muffin. I really recommend it, it's a nice roll down William Street and the coffee is cheap and good.

Today I tried out my new boots and it seems that riding in them is both better and worse! I have a lot more push in the front of my shoe and flexibility but less feeling. Hmmm.

We also went to the grocery store yesterday and through the Orchid, very lovely.

I guess the point is, I hope everyone is finding nice places to ride, and changing it up a little bit.

Mainly, this post is to alert you all to the images I will be posting momentarily. [Edit] Again, photos may or may not be added depending on who they are of.
lemmings: (My fandom goes on a journey of discovery)
So I leave for 6 days, I get back, and everyone is smashing me on the KMs, it's truly uncalled for, and also awesome to see.

I had a great break in Melbourne and as promised did some cycling research on facilities, style and general cycling happenings. I have to say, taking photos of people riding is hard to do without looking like a stalker, and I tried my level best to make sure that no one in the photos will be recognisable since they are going on the interwebs. Basically, I am illustrating a point.

Photos will be uploaded soon, there is cake to eat and meetings to be had at work right now, I can't be exploring the finer details of cycling chic in Melbourne... but needless to say, the photographs will have some description in the details that may be to your liking. [Edit] Photos will be uploaded to this post when I have time... I hope.

In the mean time, here are some fun facts about people cycling in the land of Melbourne.

1. More people do it - there are people cycling in regular clothes everywhere which is really cool to see and they are doing it to get around and get shopping done or to meet up with friends.

2. Apparently, people in Melbourne don't need bells, they just feel the vibrations of cyclists coming - I don't know how true this factoid is; but my friend Frankie seemed adept at doing this, explained it as such, and I definitely didn't hear a bell when I was over there.

3. It seems common for people to use milk crates for EVERYTHING in Melbourne, including bike baskets - this is the truth, I have seen it, seen it EVERYWHERE. They swear by them. The entire time I was there I don't think I saw one store bought bike basket. A lot of crates, old washing baskets, old trays etc. it's very interesting. Apparently crates also make good bed bases, bins, shelving, grocery bags etc.

4. It is common to see showercaps on seats - no really. Like I saw a bunch of them and now I wish I had evidence, I think I was too shocked. Usually it's a shower cap or a plastic bag when a cycle is parked to ensure a dry seat if it's been raining.

5. There are locking facilities everywhere - so locking your bike and leaving it really isn't hard, and because so many people do it, it looks safer too. Whether that is true is a different story.

6. There are cycle paths... of varying quality - it's great that there are cycle paths but if we do it here in Perth I sure hope that most of them aren't as bad. The cycle paths in Melbourne are often off to the side where there are cobble stones and uneven roads, and cars like to park in the cycle path, which is especially dangerous on busy peak hour roads like Brunswick Street and St Georges Street.

7. Lots of people still ride at night - especially girls which I think is amazing, because I have even seen them on Lygon street. They all seem brave, wear helmets and have lights flashing. It's amazing the safety they must feel.

8. The bike share scheme isn't working so much - apparently 70 people have signed up and it's being called a flop. I think if you see where the bikes are and factor in the congestion, the fact a lot of people who are going to ride in Melbourne already have bikes and the no helmet no riding rule, it's not surprising that they haven't been very successful. I wonder if the money would have been better spent on upgrading paths and roads.

9. There are some streets that are made for cycling - I think one is called Canning Street; wide grassed medians, cars can go there but they are not the primary mode, now that is cool. Reminds me of Stirling plans, however, I think it's important that the places with safe cycling culture are integrated properly with the areas of different culture.

10. There are more girls riding there than guys - I am basing this factoid purely on what I saw, but I saw a critical number of girls riding and I saw them doing it in casual clothes. I also saw a lot of men riding girls bikes that they had obviously borrowed, so the push for women cycling can certainly learn something from the ladies over there. Specifically, I am not sure what, but regardless, something.

Mark did a few big rides over there and on Sunday he did the Degani Kinglake Ride. It's like a 120KM loop through the country side. I seriously considered adding him to our Pin Pals group just to rack up the KMs but I keep telling myself, it's not about winning. The link to some preliminary pictures for the Degani in case you are interested is: http://www.supersprint.com.au/events/degani-kinglake-ride-2010/photo-gallery.aspx#/media/116488/DKLR1.jpg

In final news I saw some photos go up on the Glamour Push website and there are some lovely ladies and men looking very lovely on the bike. My picture is up there and I don't look awful which is a plus.

Will try and upload some photos and descriptions soon, in the meantime, keep riding, keep smiling and I'll keep blogging.
lemmings: (My fandom goes to battle.)
Yesterday was the first official day of the Cycle to Work Challenge. I'm very please to say I got frocked up in my work clothes and rolled down to work; and it was such a lovely day to ride I nearly rolled down to the foreshore instead. I've seen a marked increase since yesterday in the number of people riding but for the most part it has been people riding very fast in lycra. For this reason, and because our fearless leader is organising events such as 'How to Change Your Inner Tube With Deanne', I feel it is important to impart some knowledge as a recently novice cyclist who is small, has no gears on their bike and is slowly learning how to ride safely on the road.

Rule Number 1 - Everyone hates cyclists; even cyclists It's important to remember that a lot of people dislike cyclists and feel they shouldn't be on the road or footpath. This shouldn't discourage you from riding, but it should make you more aware of what is going on around you and how to behave when riding. A lot of cyclists can be seen as dangerous because they ride on the road without knowing the rules, or they weave out and inbetween cars and let's face it, signalling is not as easy on a bike. It's important, even when you are on the footpath to know when to bail, and how to do it safely. A confusing situation for cars is made more confusing by cyclists getting involved. Be confident on the road and learn with someone who knows and on non-busy streets. If you are not confident, don't ride on them. Round abouts are awful. SERIOUSLY. And if you can tell a car behind you is getting impatient and might try to get passed you, either go when it's safe or get off. Just this morning this happened to me at a banked up round about. Knowing the ute behind me seemed like he was going to try to run me off the road I looked for a safe opportunity to lift my bike onto the footpath and get off the road. Similarly, approaching a built up intersection yesterday I carefully pulled over into a parking bay and walked on the path until it had cleared. Too much going on at the same time, not good. And not good for a novice cyclist. Saying good morning on the footpath, signalling to cars, making eye contact, pulling safely off the road when you need to, or hopping off your bike and walking when there are lots of pedestrians on the footpath are all good ways to not make people want to kill you.

Rule Number 2 - Cars are scary; so are pedestrians
It's very easy to get freaked out by cars, they are huge, scary and generally can kill you. Being sure of yourself on the road is important, as is not getting freaked out when a car passes you. It takes time and practice but as long as you hold your line and anticipate what is ahead you will be okay. Also, pay close attention to parked cars, you never know when someone will open a car door and not see you. That will not be fun. Similarly, pedestrians often do not look for you on the footpath. Bells can make people jump every which way so paying attention is important, as is slowing down. Lots of people walk with earphones in or talking on mobiles so it's important to be vigilant and watch what they are doing to look for your window to pass them or turn etc.

Rule Number 3 - What should be in your basket
A basket - especially for a lady - is a very useful thing. There are many different types of basket and many ways to attach them. Personally, I have a larger, flatter one on my back tray. This works well for me because not only does it fit more, it doesn't hinder my visibility. Mine is tied down securely with occi straps which you can find at the reject store for cheap. Be very careful with these as they can flick you. Strapping down whatever is in your basket makes it obviously more secure, so they are good things to have. In addition, my basket usually contains a lock (thicker cable is better), lights (you would be surprised how dark it gets in winter and quickly), a jacket, a pocket hair brush and mirror, lunch and a hand bag. Occassionally it will include shopping, clothes, documents etc. it is vital to keep a lock, strap and lights in your basket though.

Rule Number 4 - Group riding is a skill
Riding in a group is a great way to learn about road rules but you have to be comfortable in both your ability and in that of the group you are with. On the road there are many cyclist who ride very fast in groups and this can be intimidating. Watch carefully for these. Calling backwards is a great way to ride safely while you are still learning rules, but make sure you are also watching cars and pedestrians for yourself. Similarly, hand signals are important, and making your you are not riding too close to the other person in case they need to break suddenly or in case they have an accident and come off. Only do things that you are comfortable with and try not to hesitate as this may cause unsafe behaviour from others.

Rule Number 5 - Keeping your bike in good working order
As Deanne says, treat your bike like you would a car. Be aware of how it feels so that you know if something is going wrong. Check the tyres to see if they are properly pumped before you ride and know how to change an inner tube. Carry your smart rider and some cash with you incase you do need to get somewhere and your bike is damaged. Clean your bike and have it serviced. Check tyres for damage and for grip. Check breaks and see how your bike responds to gravel, sand and wet roads. Once you get a feel for it, you will know what to do and what not to do.

That's enough serious prattling from me. I am enjoying riding in and today I did the same. Tonight I fly out to Melbourne and I will keep my eyes peeled for some good stories and shots. Photos will be uploaded sporadically. I decided this morning that if I win this bike, I am going to name it after Morgana in Merlin, because she is awesome. Do with that what you will. Next time the blog will resume its humourous tone, I promise. I felt that some serious information would not go astray this time.
